For grass to grow healthy and strong it needs at least 1-1.5 inches of water a week. You might be asking “how long do I have to water to get an inch or an inch and a half?” Next time you water, place a can on your lawn where water can get in. Time how long it will take to get a half inch of water in the can. It should take about 30 minutes.If you wanted to, you could water deeply two or three times a week instead of every day. This means that you will set your sprinkler system to water for about 20-30 minutes three days a week.

When to water

Starting after the last freeze of the year, you will want to start your watering regimen of 20-30 minutes a day, three days a week. It is better for your lawn and your wallet if you water during the cooler parts of the day. Set your sprinkler system to run overnight or before 10am.
